question about GPU

hi
so what does the frequency mean in a gpu?
like for example i have a GeForce 920m
which im assuming means that its running at 920 megahertz
but is that the speed for every individual core in the gpu or is it the speed of every core combined ?

because if its the speed of the whole graphics card, so every core combined, then i dont get why a 920m gpu is faster at drawing graphics than a cpu running at 2.8 GIGAhertz ?

A GeForce 920M GPU apparently has a clock speed of 954MHz.

A simplistic explanation...

A GPU, even when slower than a multi-core CPU, can be faster at drawing graphics because it is engineered to draw graphics. A CPU has to be multi-purpose.
The "m" in the name means that GPU is for a laptop.
