How to improve

Hi guys
I have a small problem, right now I do not know how to improve. Let me explain better, the professor gives us slides and a book, and with theory no problem, I understand it. The problem comes in the practical part when I often have no idea how to create a program or how to start, and often looking at the professor's solutions I realize that these are things I would never have done. What do you recommend doing to improve? Excercise? where? Studying solutions?

These exercises may be a bit ahead of where you are at, but worth a look:

You can always write some code and post it with your questions. Most times the replies are better than what you could learn in school.
I always found reading all the post in this forum to be useful.
