It is case dependent how demanding that teacher is. The teacher might not be very helpful nor point out your errors, but "regular" students that post here say the same about their "professors".
The purpose of educational courses is that the students learn. Learning on your own has the same purpose.
(If you say that courses hand out grades too ... I can mark myself F any day.)
