How can I use C++ and where to start?

Hi, I'm currently trying to learn how to program. I'm 15 and I only know basic Java. I've decided to attempt C++ but I have no idea how to start, I will try look up some tutorials and maybe buy a book about it but what I'm really asking is what can I use C++ for? I have a mac (I also have Windows if I have to use it) and I know that Xcode has an option for C++ but what kind of things can I do with the language after learning it? I just struggle trying to grasp the whole concept of a programming language and I'd really like someone to explain it to me. I'm not sure if I explained what I'm trying to say very well but if you understand, can you please help!
