What's the latest C++ book for beginners?

Perhaps not totally newbie, but Bjarne's book is ...pretty useless to me at this stage, it looks like it is intended for those with a decent understanding of C++ (of which I have little).

The reason I ask is because there are some tutorials on this website that aren't explained very well or don't give me enough examples. For instance, learning about pointers (that and classes has effectively scuppered me learning C++ so far) is generally quite a nuanced thing and apparently quite valuable in programming. The reason I need to learn about them is due to an API (SDL).

So if anyone can also toss in a book or two on SDL that would be much appreciated too!
