Problem that has been haunting me!

Can someone explain to me the mathematical principles behind solving this problem? http://orac.amt.edu.au/cgi-bin/train/problem.pl?problemid=688&set=aio13int

Has been keeping me up at night, how does this work. I assume it would be possible to solve using simultaneous equations, can't figure out how to turn it into equations though...
