problems while making and moving characters on the screen

I had to make a game console which i successfully made. Now i have to make a character that looks like a person and moves on the screen when you press a certain key.Please give me some idea how to make a character and move it. I was thinking of using goto command to print character on bottom of screen but i was told that it's not reccomended to use this command.Please give me idea and code example
