Article on how to find the right OSS project to get in on

I found this over on Slashdot: https://opensource.com/business/14/9/jump-into-open-source-project

Dunning-Kruger effect aside, I like most of the points that this author touches on. In hind sight, after reading the article, it should be common sense. But for people who have never earnestly tried to jump into someone else's project like this before it is helpful to have the considerations you should take into account all lined up for you.

Personally I know that I should have started looking for something a long time ago. I just don't have the motivation to finish building something on my own, but at the same time the need to create something useful never seems to go away.

What do you guys have to say about this? Personal accounts of projects that you have been\are involved in are more then welcome.
Dunning-Kruger effect

At the risk of derailing this thread, I see that A LOT in political discussions... Mostly from the side I am against. Go figure :|
