the A+ exams taught me the correct way to dispose of an hdd is to hit it with a hammer and drop it in acid. funnily enough, when it said what to do when you find porn on your clients machine, there was no option for keep it yourself
The best solution to safely get rid of a large number of HDDs is to buy or rent a shredder.

I could just sit all day watching those things go. There are even ones designed to tear apart engine blocks.
@ helios: A company I used to work for used to recycle old PC's and one of our largest clients was a no infamous bank. The contract we signed with them specified in extremely dry and detailed lawyer speak that absolutely everything they gave to use was to be shredded. And although this meant that we could not resell anything, it was completely worth it to watch CRT's, printers and copiers go through a giant industrial shredder. In hind sight, the EPA really should have had an anger stroke over what we did, but otherwise the client would have sued us.

Also, what are you guys going on about? Everyone knows that the best way to clean any electronic device is with Sodium Persulfate. This steal wool approach is just a lot of manual labor for an inferior result! EDIT: For OP's sake: This process is also called 'fritzing', what it does is it makes the traces in your motherboard a wider and this allows them to handle more power. There is some debate as to whether or not this actually helps performance, but like I always say what's the worst that could happen?
