Why does this website not have "https"?

Time appropriate greetings everybody,

ever since I first discovered this site a week or two ago I have been wondering why this website does not use https:// ....
Everytime I log in, my browser screams at me that "This isn't a secure connection!".

Is there an actual reason for this, or is is just lazyness ...?
(I completely understand it if that is the case)
;-)
the site is very old and largely untouched for many years.

you should not type your personal info into it. I think you need an email to sign up, but beyond that, keep it anon.

add it to your exclusion list to make browser shut up. The s doesnt mean jack though, plenty of evil websites have https and attack you.

And going off jonnin's point: Don't re-use passwords on multiple sites in general, but especially don't re-use a password that you use on an HTTP site, like this one.

This site does have HTTPS. It just doesn't attempt to upgrade HTTP connections (which it definitely should).

Yeah, I know. I use a separate PW and username and I used a "disposable email" to sign up (like I do everywhere ...).

Yes this site definitley has that "oldschool style", but I think that makes it "stand out".
I like it!

Oh, yes, I just saw at the bottom of the page 2000-2020.
Wow, this site really IS old ...

Great to see that a website (forum) can last for such a long time!

(I almost always end up in forums that sadly "dissapear" just a few weeks after I create an account ...)

just as aside, HTTPS doesn't really prevent any website from doing something evil. Its role is to (a) identify the site is who it says it is, and (b) prevent anything between you and the website from seeing the conversation. So it does indeed not protect you from the site itself, but it still is useful to have

Albatross, didn't know that, thanks.
Sorry for posting this here, but I sent a PM to the admin with no response.

I'm back on this forum again after about a 5 year absence. I can post replies, but I can't post new threads.

Does anyone know what is causing this?

You can send me a message via my profile address at sandy@papageek.com.

Thanks, again, sorry for posting this on a non-related thread.
Why not just create a new account if you are having problems?
What's the error message, if any, when you attempt to make a new thread?
Sometimes I get a weird internal error message (didn't memorize the specific text). Try making a quick, short test thread and delete it as soon as you make it.
There is no error message, but the Length counter stays at zero, and when I preview the post, it is blank!
That's how it is for everyone. It's a known issue, that the length counter and preview doesn't work. You should still be able to post, you just can't preview it.

As a side note, always copy your text before posting in case the site errors out, or else you could lose all your work.

Length counter and preview works OK for me.
The counter and preview work when replying to an already existing thread, they don't work when creating a new thread.

Nothing new, this has been known for years. The admin/site owner is not likely to fix it any time soon.
