How are people actually like this?

Well all my history classes through out school covered Roman Empire, Spartans, Christopher Columbus, Drake, Magellan, etc. Though went on to cover Indian War, Custer, Civil War, WWI, WWI, Korean War, Vietnam War, War in Somalia, Desert Storm, etc. They only covered world history loosely pre-WWII and then it seemed to focus on America post-WWII as ResidentBiscuit said.
Well as anyone from America already knows... America is the only place that matters, so it's the only history worth studying.

;P

Of course. We force ourselves on everyone so our history will one day be everyone's history ;) :P.
Which only helps prove the stereotype of the arrogant, asshole, fat American that the world hates. Murica

From seeing news reports and documentaries, I get the impression that the majority of Americans have little or no knowledge of the world at large.

I remember a time when I was being talked at by a tourist; this in itself was odd as most tourist get off the bus spend ten minutes walking around the ruins of the cathedral then back on the bus... "well that's another city done". Anyhoo, he said they are going to Scotland but he was not looking forward to it. On enquiring why not I was told that they don't have electricity in Scotland. Having put him straight on that and a few other misconceptions, I had the feeling that he had watched Braveheart and thought it was a documentary.

That seemed like sarcasm to me, although I guess if you believe in the stereotype or you want to believe, it makes it true.
@Grey Wolf: It's not just in other countries. I find that many people in America have little to no knowledge of America. It's startlingly pathetic how uneducated the average person here is.
I don't believe in stereotyping at all,but I won't deny that there are a large amount of uneducated fat people over here (I am American).
I wouldn't say uneducated, but rather ill educated as some get partial info and weave a full lie around it acting like they know everything. As for fat, I'm 276 lbs so I qualify for that part of the comment, and I was born and raised in Indiana so I'm definitely American. Outside of that, I'm not proud of my past (well my father's past) and my interests are Programming, drawing, law, writing, music, math, science, and history. I also try not to post things without looking up things I can link to, but I do on occasion ramble and lose my point in my rambling.
I have an awful feeling. That an average American is not less educated that average Anything-else. That somehow the un/ill-educated people are just more vocal than elsewhere. That somehow Americans tend to be convinced that they're great. That elsewhere people get laughed at more. I don't know of a way to check this. I wonder if there is any statistics on the subject. I think this would be a fairly interesting result.

Hilarious. <(|8+D){}

Here, in Australia, we have Kangaroos, Wombats & Crocodiles wandering about in the city, all the men look like Crocodile Dundee, you can't buy milk in a carton, and Jesus wasn't born here because they couldn't find 3 wise men & a virgin.

Sorry if that was a bit lame.

It is amazing how much of Hollywood movies that people think are real.

Well that is bad, but it is even worse as I've heard of some people actually becoming vampire hunters after watching movies. You realize that means we have idiots running around out there saying they are Alien Hunters, Ghost Hunters, Vampire Hunters, Zombie Hunters, etc just because they saw some dumb movie?

You can join them and help them at home with your screensaver by getting the SETI@home screensaver where you are actually given a section of sky radio waves to watch for things. Though I guess it does count.
SETI? how would you feel if the aliens came and started using bad grammar and their own cocky version of english, would you ignore them too?

Nah, because the alien could probably kill us if we did ignore them.
I sometimes wonder if some posters are actually bots.

Could be, but from my experience on other forums that are hit boy bots regularly, you normally get some crazy posts about Viagra, hair regrowth, etc.
