Quite a few folks run Visual Studio 6 on Win 7. That includes VC 6. Do a search and you'll come up with a lot of hits on how to install on Win 7. I very occasionally use VC 6 on Win 7. It works fine. There's just a few minor things you've got to do to get it running. I'd go ahead and do it, but it wouldn't hurt you any to get the newest Code::Blocks release, or Visual Studio Express. They're free.
As freddie1 says vs express versions are free and, in my opinion, are a good IDE to use for c++ programming. Ive used vs 2008 express and vs 2010 express on windows 7. (am at present trying vs 2012 express but having problems with it)
