Building a Firewall

Hello everyone,

I Understand just about any level of program language and have made software/games/web development.. but I want to take on a great project, a IDS. I'm stumped on how to build a firewall.. any ideas on where to start? I can create algorithms after I know where to start so no need to give an hour long detailed message :p
