Bio:You've all heard the old saying about "people make small talk." But have you ever stopped to think just what it means? Do you know what it means when people make small talk and how they get others to do the same? Here are some communication training ideas that can help you understand the value of making small talk.

First off, we have the "people make small talk" definition. This definition says that some people go out of their way to talk to everyone they meet. They talk about everything and anything. They are loud, creative, and extroverted. They talk until you forget you are talking.

Now we have the opposite definition. This definition says that you don't want to be the one making small talk all the time, because other people will be. You need to be quiet and thoughtful when making conversation with another person. You want them to listen and to be a good listener, but you also want them to engage in the conversation too.

You may have been the one making small talk all the time, but let's say you don't want to be that person anymore. It is okay to use small talk when you are having another conversation with someone else, but you don't want to be another person for the sake of making small talk. When this happens, people can become uncomfortable and it can be hard to have a normal conversation. If you can't have a conversation with another person, then maybe it is time to re-evaluate how you are interacting with others.

Another thing you can do when you want to make small talk topics better is to learn to shut up and listen more. It is amazing how much energy is lost when you over think a conversation. Don't think about what you are going to say next, just sit there and let the person come to you. They will probably do the same. This is one of the best things you can do. If you are able to cut off a few conversations before they start, you will be able to have a more intimate conversation later.

You should never talk down to people; never use condescending language. If you do, it will send a message that you are only interested in your own success and that you are not interested in anyone else's success. When you don't respect other people, then they will notice and it will become difficult to engage in conversation with them.

You also want to keep your opinions to yourself when you are engaged in small talk. If you say something to another person and they disagree with you, then you have lost the chance for a healthy discussion. It would be so much easier if you could say the same thing to another person and they agree with you. People make small talk a lot harder than it actually is. They will just hear what you have to say and that is it.

However, if you keep things interesting enough and if you find yourself agreeing with what they are saying then you may find yourself agreeing with what they are posting or saying on their social media sites. If you do this then you are making small talk work for you. The great thing about people like Taylor Swift, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Miley Cyrus, Paris Hilton, and many other actors and actresses is that they get away with a lot. You need to remember that these are people who are known for having controversial speeches, songs, and movies. If you give them the opportunity to engage in a conversation, they will.
