Messaging Program help

Hello, I am interested in making a Program that's capable of sending messages across the country. I know there are many programs that do this, but I would really like to learn and I have no idea where to start. I don't want/need anything fancy. If anyone could give me some links, or anything to help me start it would be much appreciated!

Look into networking. (as it pertains to programming, not social media)

Make sure you understand what servers and clients are, and be aware that peer-to-peer communication exists but is more specialized.
