Need Guidance: Want to Make an IRC Client

Sorry if this is the wrong forum to post this in.

I'm bored and decided to do something I had been wanting to do for a while. I was thinking about using Qt and Qt Creator. Sadly, outside of that I was hoping for a little guidance in what I needed to do as things I found were to sites that are no longer operational and Google is bringing up tons of sites on threads that are also linking to dead sites.

For sockets I know about Beej's tutorials, but I didn't know where to go for getting an understanding of the IRC protocol. Thus my reason for asking for guidance.
