Bloggers

Do you even blog? Lol. But seriously, I'd like to start blogging about techy news/games reveiews etc. Is it as simple as it sounds? Wondering if I should buy a website myself, or pay a company to sort out everything. Any tips?

I don't personally blog, though I have thought about starting one up a few times. Though to be honest I couldn't find enough stuff to write about to make it worth while.

Is it as simple as it sounds? Well that really all depends on you and what you want to blog about. Think about stuff like, do you have enough things to write about to have enough posts to keep viewers interested? If you are doing an educational blog do you know the subject(s) well enough to actually give advice on them? Do you enjoy writing and are good at it? etc. etc.

Basically only things that you can answer for yourself.

Wondering if I should buy a website myself, or pay a company to sort out everything.

In my opinion I wouldn't drop any money on it at first. There is plenty of free website builders out there and also free hosting services that you can use. Then after awhile if you find that you like blogging then you can consider upgrading to your own domain/premium hosting and maybe buying a nice blog website or paying someone to build one.

No need to waste money if you aren't sure if you will continue doing it or if you will even enjoy it in my opinion.

If you are curious what options are avaible for free to start your own blog here is a short list.

Wordpress - https://wordpress.org/

Wordpress is the first that comes to mind. You can get a free wordpress blog and the software to keep it running smoothly. It is quite easy to use and if you do want to get a more professional look and feel to your blog later there is plenty of premium themes available.

Wix - http://www.wix.com/

A free website builder that provides some pretty nice looking templates. Worth a look if you want a more custom website and don't want to deal with the HTML/CSS and the backend.

GitHub Pages - https://pages.github.com/

Free website hosting (1 Personal page per user, 1 page per project) through github. I would recommend this if you want to try and create a blog on your own or want a bit more control over everything. There is also quite a few blog templates out there already that use Jekyll https://help.github.com/articles/using-jekyll-with-pages/

Hopefully that helps a little bit.

I used to be a hard core blogger.

In the end, it just wasn't for me.

That being said, I fully encourage you to give it a try. If you want to be a serious blogger, pick a theme and stick to it (I don't recommend blogging about your personal life - if you're an angsty teenager it's fun, but nobody will read it and you will most likely regret it within 6 months).

Techy blogs are great, and game reviews are super helpful. There's a lot out there though, so try to put a unique twist on it - add your own flare.

Since you're just starting out, don't buy a website. Start with a free blogging site (Z e r e o gave great links) and if you decide you're really serious about this and free blogging sites just aren't offering what you want - get your own site.

Good luck! If you do decide to blog, send me a link and I'd be more than happy to check it out.
Right, thanks so much to everyone for the help :) Some good links there. For website templates, would you consider http://www.1and1.com/website-templates a good option? Seems pretty good because I get the template and they will host my site right?

Well, it's only free for 30 days.

I don't know what webs/freewebs' policy is now, but back in the day I used to use them

http://www.webs.com/

There were a few others I had used in the past, but I can't really remember.

You could also always join a blogging site. I know someone who used to use Blogspot, and a few people who used wordpress.
Ah ok, looks like I've got quite a bit of researching to do before the fun stuff starts :/ Cheers for the help though :)
