Installing ubuntu

Having trouble installing ubuntu. It's on my external hard drive(16.04.1). I pressed tab and enter under install ubuntu, then text appears at the bottom but it won't do anything else(gave it 15 minutes) , until I press enter 3 times then it will boot into the other screen and bring me back to the ubuntu boot menu. Any ideas?
