debian based lightweight distro?

I'm setting up a VM on my home server for development purposes. Since it'll be running at all times so I can always ssh in when I'm away I was hoping to make it as lightweight as possible (read: low memory and CPU consumption)

I prefer debian style software management, so I was hoping to find something like that.

Any suggestions?

edit: I should note that replacing the OS on the server with linux is not an option.

also, Ideally it would be running without X-server at all times

Hi there,

Can't recommend any specific distro myself, but it's bound to be in here I would think: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions#Debian-based

Also see: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Minimal_Linux_distros

Hope that helps.

All the best,

You could always build your own custom distro:

I'd never heard of that one before O: Definitely checking it out now.

You can make Debian *really* lightweight. :)

Install Gentoo.

I would just use Debian. If you want to get really lightweight, you could use Arch or Gentoo but neither of them are Debian-based.
I considered setting up a custom Debian install that was ultra light weight, but I'm lazy and wanted quick and easy :P I resolved this by install crunchbang linux.

First time setting up an SSH server went smoother than expected.
