I need advice for a project I might pick up

Basically, I'm considering rolling a custom Linux distro designed to launch VMs and switch between them quickly, or run multiple in the foreground simultaneously. The idea here is that RAM is becoming cheap, multi-core processors are becoming the norm, and dual booting can be a pain in the ass.
I'm not really expecting this to take off and become popular, but, do you think it's worth doing? Outside the benefits of the experience I gain in the process, do you think anyone would actually use this?

As opposed to simply installing one's favorite VM from the repos, and run it in one's favorite distro? If you want to optimize the kernel itself, I think it'd be more rewarding to submit patches to the kernels developers.
That's more or less what I was thinking. But hey, completing it would look good in a portfolio when applying for internships, right?
