Terminal commands?

So i was using the terminal and ffmpeg to record my desktop, slightly peeved i had to close the terminal to stop recording. I would like to write a program to do all the terminal stuff for me, but how? Ive heard system("") to do that, but i don't want to destroy the security of my computer.
