File Types

Hey there,
I'm working on a Windows App and I need to know about saving data to public and private file types.

I'm capable at saving .txt files but, I have no understanding of other public file types.
I also don't know the procedure to create application specific files i.e. Private Files.

Is the process of streaming data to different file types, specific to each file type?

If you could point me in the direction of some tutorials on:
1. Common Public File Types
2. Creating Private File Types
3. The process of read/write to each file type,
It would be much appreciated.

Or even give me a step by step in your response.
