Bitmaps Operations

Dear all,
I am a student who got an internship within specialized Image processing company, I've been appointed on a legacy software that needs some improvements and new algorithms(functionality) to be added, so far so good, I've implemented the major task and I am testing it, for sake of testing I gonna need to manipulate bitmaps, loading, extracting and changing its data, creating a modified bitmaps and other operations, but I not familiar with the handling of bitmaps, I've tried to get help from my team mates but they r all so busy and always say "wtf, u do not know bitmaps go through the system code & find out", well, the system code about 100,000 lines and it so so complicated !!, I've tried google but I get some info where it's aint cover my needs(either not complete or not working codes etc),

so I need ur help to advise me about how to master BITMAP in c++ and MFC, is there any recommended book, online tutorial that could help?
