MinGW conio.h

Why does MinGW include the conio.h. I was using MinGW so I could make code that would compile on Windows and Linux distros. Reading that MinGW was a win32 port of the gnu compiler collection i was assuming that conio.h would also be on Linux. Then I found out the hard way that it is not.
I believe that ncurses would meet your needs for both as it is available for *nix and windows. I don't think MinGW was developed for "cross-platform" solutions but only for creating native windows apps with GCC.
Thank you very much, I will look into ncurses.
