Grib Format Files

Has anybody done any work with .grb files? I am looking to extract information from these files, at the moment the wind and current. This is part of a final year project using dynamic programming to optimise the sailing route of sailing vessels. I have tried using wgrib, and have read some on the format that the files are sent in. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
