how does this work

Any time you learn something, its not for nothing.
you can "probably get away with" appending a bit of data on the back end of an executable if you insist. It has the potential to trigger every other virus scanner ever made, though ... they HATE it when an exe changes. This is one of those "just because you can do something" things though. It will probably work. Its just not a great approach. I will even give it 'it was a good idea' ... your thinking is fine, but there are reasons to not do it. You may even be able to find the exact bytes to change and do exactly what you wanted to do. That would be 'ok' mechanically but still a bit hackish and unprofessional, and again the risk of OS/ virus complaints is real.

To clarify before Helios gets on my ass about this too. I was joking when I said it was all for nothing. Of course I know it's good that I am learning. I was not being literal. Keep in mind I tend to joke. It's just a thing I do. Just so there is no reason for anyone to get pissy or offended over the fact that I said that.
