Political views [me VS. teacher]

I'm sorry your schooling was so awful. I don't really know how to fix it best. But the Common-Core Standards are what prominent educators around the country seem to think will help. We have yet to see if it will make a difference. Ideal and implementation are two totally different things.

There really aren't 'eras' in literature -- but there are themes that follow from sociological contexts when (great?) literature is produced. Many writers overlap in 'era' -- sometimes the same writer, even.

That's why we modern folk have such a hard time really understanding all the stuff in Shakespeare's plays. We get the basic story just fine, but we miss all the political and sociological humor and poking in it.

The key to understanding literature is understanding the writer's background. For example, the key to understanding Helen Keller's (socialist) writings is understanding the political issues in the US at the time, in addition to the well-known issues she faced as a child.
