help picking an OS for an assignment

I have an assignment to complete. In short the company I am writing about collects data using Web analytics and combines it with operational systems data. I wanted to implement a parallel database architecture using the shared nothing model. I am not too good with choosing an OS for this model, is there a specific one I should choose?
