Programming, Piracy, and Morale

Honestly, I hate DRM but it sadly works. Thousands upon thousands of people can pirate a media to the point of it taking a good chunk of change.

It stops pirating but the pirates don't buy their game (companies assume that people pirate their game cause it's best steaming pile of shit out there, but it's not). Pirates just move on to another game they can get for free. Now what does DRM actually do? It creates inconveniences (as with all security measures) for it's paying customers. Now the actual paying customer is being punished so they end up not buying the game. This happened before and the publisher out right said that DRM was increasing profits but in reality it wasn't (they were lying), it was actually decreasing profits. The lengths big company will go to try and increase their already huge profits.

in modern world region locking is the next level of retardeness, even below DRM

Yes we have something that unites us all that should be without discrimination but it isn't cause gotta maximize those profit yields. It's really sickening to see a brand new AAA game title from some big company on steam. Just knowing that in Russia the game goes for less than half of what you pay in pretty much any other country. https://steamdb.info/app/298110/

Funny... Steam stopped me from gaming on my PC. The thing was like Malware -- always popping up when I didn't want it to and asking for updates. I had to install it to play Portal 2 -- but promptly uninstalled it after I finished the game and never looked back.

I think you got that backwards, malware works behind your back without asking permission. If you are talking about the ads that pop up when you exit a game, if you took the time to look through settings (i know your trust must have been broken with all the other crap software out there, but this is not like those) you would have seen you can simply click off a checkbox to not see them anymore.

Also you still torrent porno? Look no further brother. http://www.reddit.com/r/60fpsporn/

Don't get me wrong, a lot of DRM is straight up retarded. Region locking doesn't really make a lot of sense to me, I don't see any short or long term motivation for it other than being a cheat. That's not really what I was talking about though.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/07/19/blizzard-acknowledges-diablo-iii-always-on-is-drm/

This is pretty close to the ideal DRM. It's a pain in the ass to deal with and it takes away from consumer experience. But tell me that people wouldn't have taken full advantage of it otherwise.
In twenty years people would remember and replay great classic games of the past: Warcraft, Warcraft 2, Warcraft 3, Starcraft, Starcraft 2, Diablo, Diablo 2... But not diablo 3. Guess, why?

Honestly, it is awful. Losing your 70th level hardcore monk because of Blizzard server lag, not being able to play when internet or Blizzard servers is down. I have it, and if I got a second chance, I would not buy it, playing it at someone who decided to still buy it.

Main reason why some old games are still played is their moddability. Which D3 lacks for obvious reasons.
Welcome to the new age of "in app purchase" everyone. An era where producer and the cracker is happy.(Excluding games that are pay to win) :D

Sorry, i just am happy.

But you can use windows cracked everyone. Because most probably it is microsoft that produces cracks in order to keep windows monopoly. So use it without worry. :D

MiiNiPaa, that doesn't matter if statistically you're banking more on Diablo 3 than on Diablo 2. Regardless of how good the game is. Will Blizzard lose more player base because of DRM?

No. Actually, a rather odd thing will happen... their player base will increase. Can't give much explanation or much backing on this one... other than first hand experience that I cannot go in depth on. One could say people like DRM.

Sim City is another good example. Tell me the previous versions of Sim City were not completely pirated to hell? It not only hurt their sales, it hurt the reputation of Sim City since there sales dipped like crazy. Which do you think hurt them more? http://www.dailycal.org/2013/03/13/piracy-woes-in-simcity/

They fucked up the launch, fine. If the launch didn't fuck up, does that mean the DRM is then okay? If the launch went off without a hitch and they properly backed their server base to handle the player base, would people not have griped? Of course not. UT2004 and UT3 did key based DRM. Did anyone complain then? No, people aren't going to complain that they can't play online with a ripped copy of a game except when they aren't aware that there's a difference between the pirated and legitimate versions: http://www.greenheartgames.com/2013/04/29/what-happens-when-pirates-play-a-game-development-simulator-and-then-go-bankrupt-because-of-piracy/

For a society that relies on a company to make money, you cannot possibly expect a company to not try and prevent the degradation of their sales. You have to change the way society works first... and that isn't happening any time in my lifetime.

What's your point? That people don't mind unobtrusive DRM? Sure. What MiiNiPaa was getting it is that all DRM is eventually obtrusive. It is by design a deliberate obstruction. If the servers hadn't failed on launch day, they will fail when Blizzard eventually goes out of business and takes them offline. But they already got everyone's money, so why should they care?
But they already got everyone's money, so why should they care?

They shouldn't if all they care about is money, but if they care about the people that supported them, then they should care. There is at least one such company among them.

I find it highly amusing that you think Valve actually cares about their user base. They're out to make money. If they weren't out to make money then neither Steam or their games wouldn't be a thing.

This is merely a way to attract more people such as yourself who actually think they're concerned about their userbase. As long as their users don't start abandoning their products, they don't care about how you feel.

People don't care enough about DRM and even if they did, companies have no real incentive to stop implementing DRM, since people do not respect DRM-free media. If a company is hurt from the lack of DRM in the short-term, the time that a company goes out of business may be way earlier than it should have been, so it wouldn't matter anyways.

DRM is bad but it somewhat works for the purpose it's used for.
Also, you put the company in a bad way at all times. Not all companies are money scroungers like you picture them to be. Again, money is an issue, not everyone has a multi-million dollar backing funding them.
I think Valve cares more than others. They also have the bank to handle missteps. Not everyone is as established as Valve or own rights to the Half-Life series, Portal series, Team Fortress 2, or DotA 2. They wouldn't go down if everyone pounced on them.

That said, they have to look for ways to make money. That's what a company does. They have to make income or they'll eventually run out bank. There's no reason you can't do both however, at least to some degree.

Valve as a whole may not, you can judge that from person to person, but the guy at the reigns certainly cares. Every company is out to make money, where did i say they aren't out to make money. How they do it is an entirely different thing. You can be deceitful, lie to your user base, do shady things in the background, etc. Just like a lot of the big companies do in the gaming industry. It is why EA was actually voted one of the worst companies in America.

Attract more people? Their actions are what attract more people. Their buisness model and how they approach situations is what attracts people. So you think a company, just about the only company in the industry that is doing good and right by their customers is only doing so cause they are secretly evil and only want your money? You gotta get off the paranoid train. They are getting people's money because they are trustworthy. If that cake is a lie then everything is a lie.

How does this contradict what I've said?
I don't think the musicians care much if we pirate their music, they still get poop tons of money from live shows and loyal fans that buy their CDs
They do care. They've been the primary ones driving anti-pirating laws.
They do care. They've been the primary ones driving anti-pirating laws.
Those are publishers. Musicians recieves money mainly from live concerts. And publishers and "copyright enforcer groups" will not stop: http://rt.com/news/prime-time/deep-purple-ordered-to-pay-royalty-to-themselves/
How does this contradict what I've said?

It wasn't suppose to contradict anything, if you think just cause they are making money they can't also care about their user base, that's your twisted view of the world. No one but yourself can change that.

In any case i do rarely see a CEO make a statement directly to their user base when the trust between them and their company is being compromised.

Hi Iam a Greek Programmer and one of the most old hacker (with the healthy side of the term)
of my country .
I dont think is stealing downloading a brand software from the net BECAUSE MOST OF THE
PEOPLE DONT HAVE MONEY TO PAY THE SOFTWARE BECAUSE THE PRICE ITS TOO EXPENSIVE
plus people who download software are students in colleages or professional programmers like
me or you or whatever ..
I believe that the problem especially in Greece ITS ABSOLUTELY ECONOMICAL and nothing else.
Thanks anyone who read this !

I am for copying things on the internet freely. I think intellectual property laws should be abolished - at least in their present form. No one should go to jail for copying files/music/programs.

I did not vote on these intellectual property laws. There was no referendum. Noone asked for the public's opinion - at least not in my country. Intellectual property rights laws are not good.

I think people who want to restrict how people view/listen to their art should perform theater/play live concerts. Artists/musicians can ask for donations or try any of the million schemes for making a living as an artist without blocking other's right to copy. An excellent scheme for music distribution: take a look at bandcamp.com. All the music there is free. No commercials, no crap. You can listen, free for life, the music in the browser. However, if you want to download mp3 files, you have to pay. Of course, you can pirate those mp3, but why do so - the site lets you listen anyways! You only pay to show your appreciation for the bands, and get the extra bonus of being able to listen to them when offline.

The only thing that needs protection is that the author/performer should be the only person allowed to make money from his performance/recording. Another person should not be able to make money with work you did. For example, it should be illegal to make money from commercials put on a piracy site - but it should be completely legal to spread movies through torrents that do not involve any money transactions and display no commercials.

And how will blockbusters make millions? I quite frankly don't care. The latest blockbusters I saw (I paid for most of them by the way) - were complete crap. I don't think the world will miss much if the big Hollywood productions go bankrupt.

I am a pirate. I download all the time be movies or software.

I am also the person that buys everything. I download a movie and watch it. If I sit through the whole movie, I go buy the movie. Same with software. I understand they have a business to run and support them. If I use software religiously and all my bills are paid, I donate once in a while.
