Recent events have once again reminded me of how wonderful a community controlled ban option would be. Anyone else find value in this? This would prevent the flood of nonsense that seems to be escalating in this forum.
I can't believe I'm saying this as I've really enjoyed the "moderator free" community here, but... maybe Return 0 is right. With xorebxebx and a number of other trolls having shown up in rapid succession, maybe there is a need for forum moderators and the like.
I disagree. The community here is moderated, and quite well, methinks. Moderation doesn't stop the occasional yahoo from stomping around a little bit -- and neither will a forum ban option.
I again state my dislike for badges and bangles and like/dislike counters and all the other forum cruft that seems popular.
I'm not looking for moderation either. I'm talking about an option to vote and ban someone. Twicker has limited time to address the lunatics that occasionally show up and it would provide the forum with a way to expedite their removal and prevent forum chaos :).
I thought that Twicker had more than just himself working at it, but after tonight's rounds, I'm beginning to like the idea of a forum ban more and more. Certain people are so aggressively rude and clueless that it hurts. You can't even be nice to said people without feeling like you've wasted your time...
I don't see who else he could get to moderate the forum, I mean, I'm fairly sure he pays for this all out of his own pocket. The ads obviously help but I doubt he gets enough to employ moderators or admins, and it would be a bit much to ask his friends for a favour like that...
I don't want moderators. Here's what I'm looking for and the requirements.
Feature: Community Ban Button
Purpose: Provide an effective means for responsible forum members to quickly stop inappropriate forum activity before it gets completely out of hand... aka spoonlicker, aka western, aka many others... The assumption is the admin has limited availability. He's not waking up at 4am to ban someone and clean things up.
R1: Add a "Vote to Ban" button available only to forum members that achieve a certain level of activity who are considered regular and "responsible" members.
R2: In order for the Ban to immediately lock the user's account, a certain number of members that have access to the button must hit Vote to Ban as well. In the cases where this is enacted you can be pretty sure if say 5 or 6 forum "elders", or whatever threshold, hit the button the guy deserves it.
R3: Once the threshold is met, the users account will be suspended pending Twicker's review.
R4: The suspension should not auto delete the users posts, just lock their account.
R5: A successful community Ban should email twicker so he may review and take any further actions such as removing posts.
R6: The number of votes accumulated must be obtained within a certain amount of time to take effect, something reasonable so enough members can take action. It is assumed at any given time enough very active members will be online.
R7: Users should know if they have been voted against so that misuse can be addressed.
I prefer the system used on Slashdot (post moderation/karma/meta-moderation). No one is banned, but trolls end up posting comments with default scores that are so low that are invisible to the masses. Everyone gets to participate in moderation (over time). It seems more egalitarian.
I sure would be happy if we come up with some way to delegate moderation to the forum community. It's not that I don't like doing it myself, but sure I have some time constraints, and it's true that some times it can take hours before I can react.
I was thinking on a simpler solution that would let "trusted" users (those currently having "Report abuse" buttons) be able to delete posts of recent users directly (in a reversible way), and putting its author into some sort of quarantine.
Most of the time these forums are really not *that* problematic, and you guys do a great job keeping it that way with your superb behavior (even towards the rudest users) and your fast abuse reports!
I'm something of a newcomer here, and I like the current system. Sure, it took a little while, but the forum has clearly been scorched of the Spoonlicker (which is such a neat handle that I'm thinking of appropriating it myself elsewhere).
I see we've also lost that insane new programming language thread, which is nice.
Hi Twicker! I think your solution would work well and would be used in only the most extreme cases aka: spoonliker/western. I agree that for the most part the forum is pretty pleasant, but when it rains it pours :). Glad you are looking into enhancing the forum. We have a great community going here.
I like that solution, but I really liked the "Critical Mass" idea - more than one person should have to click "Delete" before it works. Otherwise people could quite easily post spam until they have the ability to delete whatever they want to. This way they need multiple accounts and it's unlikely that someone could make, say, 5 accounts and get each one to, say, 100 posts before their accounts were all banned.
^Toughie...I'd lean towards making them unable to post at all for a while, if only because if they are being that incredibly spammy, they probably don't care much about the account anyway.
Firedraco, the problem I see with that is that if they are really spammy for whatever reason; they will continue to do so (by ridiculous means, aka, a second account). Don't ask why, because if you do, I'd like to ask you why people would spam like that in the first place, which is still a mystery to me (and I'd like to keep it that way).
