Sprites -.- are no where to be found

so... being someone who has no way to pay for someone to make graphics for a 2d game.. i figured i might scrounge up what the internet has to offer free.... yeah, didn't go as planned. Most sprites i can find are ripped from games like mario-sonic-pokemon. And i'm pretty sure if i made a game using mario sprites that i was making money from i would be sued until i yet again, had nothing. would any one happen to know of any resources of any places that has Legit sprite sheets by any chance.I understand it's a bit harsh to ask for free materials but i'm not an artist, and don't know what else to do about that.

Thanks for any help :)
Honestly, it would just be easier to half-do your own or pay someone- sadly, actual "free" sprites on the Internet not either pulled from something or expecting credit are few and far between.
I dont mind crediting someone. Geez even if i made money from there work i would pay them a portion of what i got. I just honestly am no where near being an artist in any form.

This is the place to meet artists, some who even specialize in game sprites. Many will work for free or accept a cut of your profits. Good luck friend. :)
One resource I read said that you should just look for a sprite sheet of some character(mario, sonic, whoever) and recolor and slightly modify the sprite as your own. If you make it different enough no one will ever know the difference. And I also read that this is done a lot. I don't remember where I read this though.

Really? You're advocating the Flappy Birds approach? It wasn't even that long ago.

@ OP: Here is a site with a pretty large set of sprite sheets: http://opengameart.org/
The copyright is on a per-collection basis though, so make sure you read the terms and conditions if you find one you like.
If you an actual game idea that you think will money, build a demo using whatever crappy art you can make yourself, and then pitch it to an artist. Tell the artist that you can't pay him/her up front, but they will get some agreed upon portion of the earnings. Students in some video game design program would be more than happy for this opportunity.
http://2dgameartforprogrammers.blogspot.com/ - Great blog for getting some sprites and also learning how to make sprites that even a programmer can do.

http://opengameart.org/ - Another good resource for some 2d sprites

http://www.lostgarden.com/ - Huge amount of art here though kinda hard to find.

http://pousse.rapiere.free.fr/tome/ - some tile art

http://www.spiralgraphics.biz/packs/ - some textures (Pretty good quality)

http://love2d.org/wiki/Free_Game_Resources - Post that helps group some good sites together in one place

http://letsmakegames.org/resources/art-assets-for-game-developers/ - Another site that groups sites together to make art and other resources easier to find.

http://hasgraphics.com/category/tilesets/ - Less known but has some decent stuff here.

http://gameartpartners.com/downloads/category/game-art-bundles/featured-bundles/ - One of the cheaper paid art sites out there (Know you want free stuff but even so thought it might be worth posting).

There is actually quite a bit more out there so won't list it all. Though I will let you know now that scrounging the web for free art will work just for placeholders in your game while making it but you are going to eventually need a dedicated artist or will have to pay for art if you want anything polished.

The reason why is because most free art isn't of that great of quality but the even bigger concern is it is extremely hard to find free art for a whole game that matches the general theme. Every free one you get will have a different "feel" to it and will make your game art look like it is all over the place.

I would say your best bet is just to grab some free ones to use as placeholders while developing your game (Hell I even just use squares and circles sometimes) and once you get farther into the project start advertising that you are looking for a artist to help out. They will be more likely to jump on board since you have a working game (Though not polished) and just need the art.

Artists are just like programmers in that sense, they don't want to join a project just to have it fall apart and they did all the art for nothing.

Anyways wish you the best of luck with your game and hope all goes well.
Computergeek01: No That's not it at all what I'm saying. I'm saying change it into your own, basically I mean use Mario, take away his mustache, his hat, change overalls into shirt and pants, and recolor shirt, pants and hair. It really doesn't look the same at all. The real Idea here is just to get a good shape and size of a sprite so you can make your own. I don't mean using something blatantly copied.
